Job Title:  CNC Machinist

Location:  Roanoke Rapids, NC



Kennametal has a current opening for a CNC Machinist at our Roanoke Rapids facility.


Job Summary


The purpose of this job is to manufacture high precision inserts which meet all customer delivery and quality requirements.  Specific duties of the position include the set-up, adjustment, and operation of multiple manual and CNC machines and the verification that all dimensional requirements have been achieved through appropriate tests, inspections, and performing documentation on control plans. Duties also include tasks related to the manufacturing environment and Lean manufacturing principles such as safety, 5S, and standard work procedures.


CNC operators work in a team environment and they are expected to assume as much responsibility for managing the productivity, workflow, and quality of their product line as possible.  CNC operators are expected to follow all safety rules and regulations while in plant.



Education & Experience


       CNC operators must have a high school diploma or GED. 

       Two or more years of manufacturing or military experience or two years of formal technical training is preferred with specific knowledge of blue print reading and GD&T         methods of dimensioning, as well as proper use and care of precision measurement tools.




1.      Responsible for shaping the product to specific tolerances per the manufacturing process and equipment methods. All surfaces are ground to precision tolerances in accordance with engineering or customer drawing requirements.   65%

2.      Responsible for the set-up, programming, adjustment, and troubleshooting of all equipment in their work area. 10%

3.      Responsible for adherence to all quality standards using high precision test and inspection equipment.  And performing all documentation requirements of the area's quality control plan.  10%

4.      Responsible for working together in a team environment to organize and prioritize work on a daily basis to ensure smooth workflow and to meet customer due date requirements.  Team communications are required within the shift as well as from shift to shift.  2%

5.      Responsible for actively participating on Continuous Improvement projects.  This includes formal CI projects as well as informal ad hoc projects within the Grinding Cell.  2%

6.      Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment by adhering to all safety procedures and policies, including participation in safety activities as outlined on the Kennametal Safety Flight Plan.  This also includes conducting assigned housekeeping responsibilities to maintain a clean and safe workplace.  10%

7.      Responsible for understanding and following all applicable Quality System procedures (ISO 9000) as well as all other plant policies and work rules.  1%

8.      Responsible for the timely and accurate reporting of production and quality data using Kennametal's computerized shop floor reporting system.  1%
